April is National Autism Awareness month, and we proudly stand in support of our Autistic community. To help raise awareness, many of our officers purchased a specialty Autism Awareness badge, and will be displaying them on our uniforms as a reminder of our commitment and sensitivity to those we serve.

A community member reached out inquiring about our Autism training and registry. Lt. Scribner replied: Specific to Autism Awareness, during one of our annual training events we invited an area clinician to do a department-wide presentation on interactions with Autistic children. Autism Awareness was also a specialized topic during a previous mandatory In-service training. Because of the training our officers have received, we have had successful outcomes interacting with Autistic children on calls we have responded to in school settings as well as in the community. Regarding a program or registry to notify our department that a child is on the spectrum, we do have a form that can be submitted to our communications center so we can add the information to our computer aided dispatch records. The form can be found on our website and the direct link is here: Emergency Contact Form for Children with Special Needs
